WHAT WE DO?

The BioMag Laboratory at Helsinki University Hospital is a center for magnetoencephalography (MEG), magnetocardiography (MCG), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

In MEG and MCG, the feeble magnetic fields produced by the brain or the heart are measured with sophisticated SQUID magnetometers inside a magnetically shielded room (MSR). TMS is the converse of MEG: The brain is stimulated through the skull with magnetic fields. In parallel, Near InfraRed optical Spectroscopy (NIRS), an emerging non-invasive imaging modality, is also developed and applied.

BioMag in a new Flagship
The Head of the BioMag Laboratory, Professor Hanna Renvall, is a principal investigator in a new Flagship of “Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling”, selected by the Research Council of Finland.
Over 1,5 M€ new funding for BioMag research
During spring and early summer 2023 new funding for research to be carried out utilizing the BioMag facilities has been granted by the Academy of Finland and Sigrid Jusélius Foundation for more than 1,5 M€. BioMag in Euro-BioImaging ERIC
BioMag Laboratory is part of the Euro-BioImaging: Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (EuBI-Fi) on the national research infrastructure roadmap of the Academy of Finland, and, as part of the Finnish Biomedical Imaging Node, part of the Euro-Bioimaging ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium), both effective since 2021.
